Nutriceuticals , Cosmeceuticals, Nutri-Cosmetics

But these terms are not recognized by the FDA, CTFA, INCI or any other group in the cosmetics industry. They may exist and see use in today's cosmetics and personal care market but they nave no real meaning. These terms are devised to create a marketing advantage for products that are meant to sound like they are cosmetic drugs but are certainly no where near that. So I thought I would pen a name for them myself - Prescriptacosmetics. Sound crazy? Well it is. It's almost like the word "masstige". What is this? It's just a cross between mass-market products and prestige products. To me there is very little difference. As a formulator, the ingredients I use in a cosmetic cream or lipstick can go into any type of product. At the bench, I see very little difference and hardly any impact no matter what term you want to use to describe that cosmetic product. The key is the ingredients used and how they perform in the product. Anything after that is product positioning and price point.

What all these terms do is bridge the gap between cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and nutritional products, but without having to go through all the OTC Drug registration and testing required by the United States Food and Drug Administration. What this does is save significant cost and labor while at the same time still allow claims to be made for products. However, these specific terms are rarely used on the product itself. One company that uses the specific term "cosmeceutical" in their brand name is N. V. Perricone, MD - Cosmeceuticals. Although the FDA doesn't officially recognize the term, consumers do understand what they are.

The terms are not recognized by the FDA and there is no real definition for them. They were just made up by some marketing wizard to combine the attributes of a cosmetic product and the claims often seen in a pharmaceutical product or nutritional product or supplement. It would be a cosmetic product which makes strong claims and therefore gives the product and extra boost in its positioning within the cosmetics market. They come close to being a pharmaceutical without really being one. The names are sort of misleading but have obtained fairly wide acceptance within the cosmetics and personal care community.

So why did I choose Prescriptacosmetics? Why not? Maybe because I like to see a red line under the word that means there is no such word or spelling is incorrect when I use MS Word to compose a document. Do a spell check? Why bother. It's my word! And it was created using the same thinking as the terms mentioned above.

But the main point to be made here is that these products are very popular and do offer the consumer all the benefits of a drug item without a real drug claim being required. As long as the consumer can get the benefits the products claims and states on the package, it should be called anything that the consumer can relate to and identify with and as long as the product performs. These products contain ingredients which help keep the skin healthy and young-looking, fight the visible signs of aging, contain antioxidants and free-radical scavengers, protect the skin and hair from harsh environmental conditions, and do all the things necessary for which a product should not really be called a drug. As long as they perform as claimed and the consumer perceives a visible difference before and after application and regular use, then it shouldn't matter what they are called. Just as long as they work and are safe when used properly.
