The most popular uses of fennel are to reduce water retention and urinary tract problems and to soothe an upset stomach. Historically, both the aroma and the essential oil in a massage oil are said to be good for weight loss. It promotes the body's metabolism and slightly stimulates the adrenal glands.
Modern aromatherapists use fennel's scent to improve self-motivation, including the ability to diet, although it can both reduce and stimulate the appetite. The essential oil heals bruises and is especially useful for rejuvenating mature skin, as well as dry skin prone to acne. In previous centuries, fennel cream was said to remove complexion wrinkles, perhaps due to the essential oil's estrogen like properties. It increases mother's milk, but a nursing Mom should drink the tea instead because the dose is much safer.
